«Gennady Rozhdestvensky has opened the Season of the Moscow Performing Arts Centre leading the National Philharmonic of Russia… Under his baton the NPR proved to be a flexible and subtle object that allowed making the boldest experiments. The audience was moved by the colourings of Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony with its large and small strokes, overlapping lines, dark and light tones and halftones. The soloist Victoria Postnikova was comfortably seated on the soft orchestral “cushion”, thus providing a well-balanced ensemble, and the Second Piano Concerto by Saint-Saens, teeming with beautiful melodies, evoked a storm of emotions in the audience. But a real storm of cheers was provoked by Schnittke’s music to the “Dead Souls” film, the performance of which manifested the magic power and beauty of the work».

The performance of Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony was close to ideal.
